Advantages of Intranet
For web sites web technology is an obvious
choice, but inside the corporate walls, why is the Intranet such a magnificent
platform for database applications?
Traditional applications need to be
installed for each user that needs to use them. This is not a problem if you
only have a couple of computers. If you have 50, this can be a very time
consuming task. The problem continually presents itself every time an
application is updated. Then there are problems with compatibility of software
and different configurations of machines.
Web applications avoid these problems. The
installation is minimised to a server, and a small number of administrator users
for configuration and management. The majority of users access the application
via their web browser. Application updates are minimised to the server, and
administrators. All you need to consider is who can see what.
Web applications are thin in nature. Data
is sent to the user as they request it. Remote users can dial in to gain access,
often not an option with traditional applications.
